Benefits of Online Therapy

  • Virtual methods can be as effective as face-to-face therapy 

  • Reduces feelings of shame, creates more openness,  and decreases self-consciousness related to the body

  • Allows for flexibility, easier and confidential access of services

  • Allows for continuity when away, on vacation or travelling for work

  • Clients with social phobias have the ability to access services from home

  • Artwork can be created in sessions, as well as in between sessions​

  • ​Accessibility – removes barriers for those with medical conditions, or unable to travel

Challenges of Online Therapy

  • Sometimes it might be harder to connect to your therapist

  • It is harder to give and receive warmth

  • More difficult to read non-verbal cues

  • More descriptive language might have to be used to account for potential misinterpretation and misunderstanding. Clarifications might have to be provided.

  • The client's expression might be limited by the client’s access to art materials.

  • Technology is sometimes unreliable, troubleshooting might interrupt the session

  • Risk of cyberattacks, the vulnerability of data.

  • ​Potential for boundary violations. Sometimes it is hard to define relationships when talking about difficult things in your own home.

  • Social media boundaries.

  • ​Client's preference for face-to-face therapy.

  • ​Barriers in communication due to disability.

  • Complex client's needs may need additional supports

  • ​Working with child clients requires an adult to facilitate the process at their location – train the adult to support the child’s therapeutic needs
